Sub panels receive electricity from a main panel, as opposed to receiving it directly from the utility. There are two options for monitoring electricity in sub panels.
In many instances, a sub panel contains circuits for a unit or area within a building. People often want to know how much energy the unit is consuming. A common solution is to measure the sub panel from the main panel. Current transformers (CTs) clamp around the wires connected to the sub panel circuit. These CTs wire to an electricity meter.
The second option is to monitor circuits within the sub panel. Monitoring all of the circuits provides a complete picture of electricity use by the unit in the building.
PowerWise offers web-based apps to report on power and energy use by a sub panel. Power shows when the electricity is being used and what is the peak demand. Energy charts show kilowatt hours (kWh) by hour, day, and month.
Projects start at approximately $1500 to meter electricity use for sub panels. The equipment includes the electricity meter, gateway, current transformers, and 2 years of software subscription.
